How To Save On Your Electricity Bill

Posted on

Electricity is one of the services that most people pay for monthly. You are using it all the time, and it is an ongoing cost that can cause high bills if usage is not monitored. Electricity is measured by the amount of kilowatts you use. There are many ways that you can use to reduce the amount that you are paying on your electric bill.

Ask About Rates

One way to reduce your electricity bill would be to reduce the amount per kilowatt that you are paying. This can be done by first finding out what you are currently paying per kilowatt. Call around to competitors to see if they can offer you a better rate, and then switch companies. You can also call your company, and ask if there is a time of day that they charge more per kilowatt. Many electric companies have higher rates per kilowatt at times that people use the electricity in larger quantities, such as around dinner time. You can avoid the higher cost by switching high electricity using actions, such as washing your clothes or running the dishwasher, at times when the amount per kilowatt is lower.

Change The Way You Use Lighting

Switching your light bulbs from regular bulbs to LED bulbs can save you a large amount on your electric bill. LED bulbs are made to last for a very long time. Regular light bulbs are changed more often. LED bulbs cost a lot more money, but in the long run you will save because their kilowatt usage is lower than a regular light bulb.

Keep your lights on timers to save money. If you have lights that are turned on and off at times you specify, you will be able to monitor the usage. Having lights on when no one is in the room, is wasteful. Make sure to always turn off things that are not being used.

Unplugging Items

One way to save on electricity is to unplug appliances and electronics when they are not in use. Your electrical outlets still draw electricity when something is plugged into it. Larger appliances use more electricity, therefore drawing more current. If it is too tedious to walk around your home unplugging things that are not being used, you can by outlet strips to plug into each outlet. These will allow you to plug in more than one item, and you can simply unplug one outlet strip instead of individual items. Contact an electrician for more helpful tips.
